Caitlyn Jenner sparked criticism over the weekend after she made a crack about liberals to a crowd of Republicans while addressing last week’s shooting attack at a GOP congressional baseball practice.
“Nobody deserves what happened out there,” Ms. Jenner said Friday at the convention of the College Republican National Committee in D.C.
“Fortunately, the guy was a really bad shot. Liberals can’t even shoot straight,” she joked, causing the room to erupt with laughter.
The former Olympian was referring to James Hodgkinson, a leftist gunman who opened fire at a congressional baseball practice Wednesday morning in Alexandria, Virginia, wounding House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, a congressional staffer, a Tyson Foods lobbyist and two Capitol Police officers. Mr. Hodgkinson reportedly fired off dozens of rounds before he was taken down by police. He later died from his wounds.
“There’s no justification for it,” Ms. Jenner said Friday. “There are crazy people in the world — we know that. It happened then, and it will happen again, unfortunately.
Ms. Jenner, who is transgender, praised one of the officers for putting herself in harm’s way to take down the shooter. Officer Crystal Griner, an openly gay woman, was shot in the ankle.
“She did her job,” Ms. Jenner said. “She wasn’t thinking about LGBT issues, she wasn’t thinking about any of those types of things. She did her job and she did it well.”
Ms. Jenner drew criticism from liberals on social media, who called the reality TV star’s joke about liberals insensitive and ill-timed.
“Wow. What a jerk,” wrote Mother Jones’ David Corn.
