She was not on her minstrel cycle.
Kim Kardashian said she was just “really tan” and not wearing blackface in photos released last week to promote her forthcoming KKW Beauty Creme Contour and Highlight Kit.
“I would obviously never want to offend anyone,” the reality TV legend told the New York Times. “I used an amazing photographer and a team of people. I was really tan when we shot the images, and it might be that the contrast was off.”
The complexion kerfuffle blew up after critics accused Kardashian of purposely darkening her skin — a form of either cultural appropriation or racism.
But Kardashian denied both.
“I showed the image to many people, to many in the business,” she said. “No one brought that to our attention. No one mentioned it.”
Insensitivity and poor radar seem to run in the family. Kylie Jenner was called out for wearing cornrows in 2015. Khloé Kardashian took heat for wearing a Native American headdress in 2014.
And family matriarch Caitlyn Jenner made an ill-suited joke after last week’s shooting at the Congressional baseball practice.
Kim Kardashian has taken the latest career hiccup in stride — and expressed thanks for people who are scrutinizing her so closely.
“Of course, I have the utmost respect for why people might feel the way they did,” she added in the interview.”
She added that she and her team transformed their colorblindedness into a teachable moment.
“We made the necessary changes to that photo and the rest of the photos,” she said. “We saw the problem, and we adapted and changed right away. Definitely I have learned from it.”
